About Us

The Medical Volunteers Organization (MVO) is a Rwandan registred non-profit organization with an initiative to mobilize specialist doctors that provide voluntary medical services to communities in rural and semi-urban areas. We bring together passionate professionals who donate their time and expertise to provide essential medical care to underserved communities.

Through MVO initiatives medical specialist practitioners provide free medical consultations and surgeries to communities that would otherwise face barriers in seeking and accessing care at their designated health centers/ hospitals or take a long time to get the access to specialized healthcare.

The members of the organization envision a healthy, innovative, empowered and prosperous community in a safe and secure environment. We seek to undertake activities in the areas of ; health, education, environment and social-economic development. Having a healthy population is a critical ingredient in the complex milieu of development of families, community and the nation.

WHY MEDICAL VOLUNTEERS ORGANIZATION WAS ESTABLISHED

Although the World Health Organization(WHO) recommends a minimum of one doctor per1,000 people, Rwanda has fewer doctors.

According to the National Strategy for Health Professions Development 2020–2030, Rwanda’s
doctor per population ratio rose from 1 doctor per 16,001 people in 2010 to 1 doctor per 8,919
in 2018. The number of Rwandan specialist doctors also rose from 94 in 2009 to 436 specialists
in 2018.

Due to inadequate number of general practitioners and specialist doctors, public health centers
and district hospitals don’t have enough general practitioners and specialist doctors. Patients
with conditions that require specialists are sent to referral hospitals which is expensive. In some
cases, transferred patients have to wait for weeks to meet a specialist due to high demand.

HEALTHCARE IS A HUMAN RIGHT !

This is why we provide voluntary medical care where it is urgently needed.
